Yes, definitely. I think from time to time people who are not addicts can miss events (sometimes depression makes people withdraw from social situations too) but when they start missing important events like their grandmother’s birthday or their parents’ marriage vow renewal party where they were expected to give a speech, then it does raise some eyebrows. The big thing for me is missing events in combination of unexplainable weird external features. I have never done drugs so this might be all in my head, but I would see them “change” – for example, they would start popping weird warts out of their skin, or get extremely pale or extremely skinny, sometimes their eyes look teary and glossy at the same time (it’s hard to explain), and sometimes you see this really dark circles under their eyes. The color of their skin changes, and so do their postures. Not one person exhibits all of these “changes” (maybe different drugs cause different effects?) but you do notice some weird changes.

Some of them would also start telling me weird stories as if they were absolute truth. For example, this one guy I knew was deadly convinced that his aunt was his lover. A few months later he was getting treated for drugs addiction.

My sister is an addict. She say’s she’s sober, which I do not believe. I
recently called her out because she was nodding off, eyes were glazed over,
motor skills numb. The next day she called me furious, she said she
“summoned demons from the pits of hell to come after me”, is that a clear
sign someone is still active in addiction? I’d say so.

There’s a lot more signs as well. Lack of empathy is the one I notice a
lot. Inability to have a constructive meaningful conversation. No personal
accountability for the things they say and or do. They have no concern for
another individual emotions, feelings, or their situation. I see this in
people including the middle aged and elderly. Example.. if they were
driving and had an accident, they would blame the Dr. for prescribing the
    meds. I’ve seen that happen.

Early on–say taking pain pills every day for 12-16 weeks in a row–you
find that you NEED one to sleep, NEED one to feel normal: if this is your
experience, then you are–or already have entered ADDICTION–or at least
    the softer term: PHYSICAL DEPENDENCE.
