Seeking Help for My Alcoholic / Depressed Sister in Rhode Island?

Question by Veridian: Seeking help for my alcoholic / depressed sister in Rhode Island?
Hello, my sister has a problem with alcohol and she also seems very depressed. She has agreed to let me find her some help, but I don’t know where to start looking. What sort of place should I look into? She does not have her own doctor. She has never sought help before. Should I just find a psychiatrist? Thank you for your advice.
Everytime I see her, she is either drunk or high (she smokes pot) and always has these emotional crying spells and cannot explain them. Just today she was crying for apparently no reason, so she said, and could not stop so I finally said that I think it’s time that she talked to someone and it just seemed like that’s what she wanted to hear.

It sounds like you should maybe try Alcoholics Anonymous. I would maybe suggest a psychiatrist if she shows signs of bizarre behavior.

If she is ready to change and really trusts your decision you need to do what a professional will do. She needs to live away from her social demands she has now. You can take her to a relative’s home to live where there is green grass and cows. Your ability to help is not enough to change the pressure from the drug needs and sex partners.

If she hasn’t hit bottom, she’s not ready to quit. There is nothing you can do if she doesn’t want to stop drinking and drugging.

She needs to be in a treatment center, at least 28 days — longer if her insurance will cover it. Try Hazelden in Center City, MN.
