Question by : Posted 3 times about pain medicine and headaches but noone answers. Its long but detailed.?
I am haveing stress headaches that cannot be treated with just otc medication. I am not going to go into my personal life but I have stress from time to time and the only treatment that I have found for these headaches is to keep stress to the minimum, but as you all know to make ends meet this is not always possible. Over the last 3 years I have seen the doctor about this 5 times and each of the 5 medications have not worked. This time I have gotten a CT scan and am being refered to a headache specialist. The CT scan was clean.
I have gotten pain medication from various different injeries such as sugery, broken bones ect. Currently it’s been 2 months since my first time seeing the doc this time around and still havent gotten a percription for anythign to try. During this wait time the headaches have gotten very sever. Instead of going to the ER I decided to take some of this medication I had left over and it was VERY effective. I had darvocet (brused ankle), oxycodone(surgery), hydrocodon(broken leg). All of these med’s were very effective to varying degree’s. These headaches are starting to effect my life in very negative ways and an effective medication is very appealing.
However there is some complications that I’m sure you all have spotted. All of these med’s have a potential for abuse. Because of this they are very hard to get a doctor to write a percription for. I know that up till now I haven’t abused any of these med’s I have 25 darvocet 10 oxycodone and 17 hydrocodon and streached these out to help with 2 months of headaches. An abuser would have went though that much faster.
Also I have a very big family and if I was accused of trying to seek drugs for abuse it would do irrapatable harm to both my family and my future plans for life. If there is a med. that can do the job w/o being a high abuse med I would love it but at this point I just want some relief. Its easy to just say just hang with it till we find something that works which is what I am expecting from the headache specialist. Percribing monthly narcodics to a 24 yr. old is unlikely.
What I want to know is what to expect and how I might go about asking for a medication that I know works w/o seeming like I seaking these drugs for abuse. Comming right out and saying “hey I know darvocet works for these why don’t you percribe me those” wouldn’t be likely to work.

Sorry about your headaches. I’ve had a problem with those, too, in the past. Narcotic painkillers are notorious for causing rebound headaches. They may be very effective at first, but then your headache will often return and even worse. It’s said that the narcotics pain meds do that. I took Darvocet for headaches and I had a huge problem with headaches returning a few hours later and it was a horrible headache. But I totally understand your situation and that it seems difficult to ask the doctor for something for pain. Actually, it is everyone’s right to be treated for our pain. The medical profession knows this. I am a nurse and this is dealt with everyday in my line of work. It’s perfectly acceptable (and expected) to ask the doctor for a pain reliever. But I wouldn’t advise asking for a specific medication, such as Darvocet, etc. Yes, that does often come across as drug-seeking, even though you might not be. Just say…”Doc, I just can’t find anything over the counter that helps these headaches. Is there anything you can prescribe that might help me?” Believe me, he WILL give you something. There are many meds that work for headaches that are not narcotic, but it depends on several factors, such as what type headache you are having, your blood pressure situation, etc. There are some very effective migraine meds, but they only work for migraine headaches, so the doctor needs to make this decision. But, by all means, DO ask for something for the pain. It is YOUR right. I hope you feel better soon.

Instead of treating the symptoms, ask your doctor to treat the CAUSE. Perhaps an anti-anxiety med or something that will reduce your stress levels.
I hear what you are saying, and I agree. Most doctors will hesitate to give you more Darvocet or Oxycontin. Vicodon won’t really do much for a headache anyway. Save them all for the next root canal or broken bone. Or drop them off at the local police station to be disposed if you don’t want them laying around. Not only are they addictive, they aren’t appropriate for stress headaches.
Start drinking water instead of coffee, shotz, alcohol of any type. Eat balanced meals. Regularly. Stay off salty, greasy stuff. You might find things go a little better.
