I have been noticing an addiction to chat. About 6 or more hours on gmail and aim. How do I lessen the amount of time? Also, can you give me ideas to do off the computer?

i suggest you first look for support in a friend. with all addictions people need support usually.
so find someone who also wants to cut down the chats, maybe hang out with them and talk together of your progress..
so that gives you something to do and a way to help the addiction.
if you feel the need to go more in depth try reading the big book for AA. you’ll find 12 steps to help cure addiction. these steps are used over for food addiction, drugs, alcohol, ect. they can be made to interpret any addition!!!
Just ban them from your house for a week first. Reading, sport (bike riding, football, tennis, badmington, gym, swimming) go to music gigs with mates, learn a new language, start a distance learning course, go to clubs (youth, dj, sports etc) Start to learn a musical instrument. I stoped smoking by just banning them from my life and learning the guitar!

If there is a will, there will be a way too.. If you wish sincerely to stop, STOP it Yourself. And you may go for some other training courses which will be of more interested to you or start some interesting hobbies where you can engage more time and gain more knowledge helpful to fellow men
