My best friend (I love her but she can be so stupid at times) does drugs occasionally. Every once in a while she smokes pot with this girl down the street and she’s taken a handful of painkillers before and last night she told me she huffed paint for the first time. I already have an anxiety disorder and she’s depressed so I worry constantly about her safety (if she will hurt herself, ect.) and now she dumps this on me?? I thought she was done with drugs. I can’t stop worrying and thinking about her dying, I just can’t lose her. Please, please help me.

well…. maybe you should tell her if she doesnt stop you will tell her parents… or maybe anonomously tip the parents with a text from the phone booth so they wont know its you… huffing paint, really, she will get really sick or die if she continues to do that! pot isnt that bad, but thats how it starts soon she will be injecting heroin and its all because no one did anything about it in the first place, tell her parents if that fails tell the police

You’re a great friend to be so concerned about your pal. There are certain situations in which one needs to NOT keep a secret including child/teen abuse or neglect, when the person threatens suicide (or homicide) or when the friend is engaging in reckless, dangerous behaviors such as drugs and especially inhalant abuse.
Please tell a trusted adult, perhaps even the school guidance counselor about your friend, if even by letting someone know anonymously. It is imperative that you talk with a grown adult since if anything happens to your friend, you will NEVER forgive yourself whether her parents need to plan her funeral and bury her 6 feet underneath the ground or visit her in a physical rehabilitation hospital due to her getting a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) from huffing (or any other destructive behavior).
Regarding huffing, please know that in addition to death and TBI being consequences that seizures, limb spasms, kidney/heart/liver damage, hearing loss may occur, too, and may happen even after the very FIRST time of use.

There are 12-step programs for the family and friends of the addict or problem drinker, Nar-anon and Al-Anon, respectively. It is generally NOT for the user themselves unless the meeting if “open” (for anyone to attend). Both self-help programs are very similar but different entities. There are usually more Al-Anon than Nar-anon meetings.
