How Do I Convince My Son to Undergo Drug Rehabilitation?

Question by evan e: How do I convince my son to undergo drug rehabilitation?
My son has been hooked to drugs since his college years. After high school, he decided to move out of the house. He told me he tried drugs only so he can fit in. He never thought he’d get hooked. But now that he’s been out of school for two years now and is still hooked to the habit, I am very much worried about him and his future. What should I tell him to give drug rehabilitation a try?

If he doesn’t want help you wont be able to convince him to get help.

This is not your decision to make. This is his decision. Leave information around for him to casually find.

I wish I could tell you what to say to convince him to go into treatment. The bottom line is he is going to have to want to change.I can give you some good advice though! Make sure to use tough love on him.Never enable him.If he comes to you for money simply tell him you will not give him money until he has completed a treatment center.Be that way with everything he ask for, rides, money,a place to stay, etc.I know it is going to be tough, but it works.

Teenagers now are the easiest prey to drug addiction simply because of their curiosity about things around them. And because of this curiosity fueled by their want of independence, they sometimes get misled by peer pressure and false definitions of what it takes to be cool. But apart from them being the victims of this addiction, the parents themselves suffer out of their kid’s condition.

What you and your son are going through can break any father’s heart, but then don’t lose hope because there are people who can and are willing to help you.

Drug rehabilitation is the only way to save your son. Getting him out of the habit – little by little – will truly help him in the long run. Although getting him to try it may seem difficult, his very commitment will carry him through the treatment and get him back a normal teenage life. I am sure that there are organizations and treatment centers within your area that can help you convince your son to admit himself to drug rehabilitation. And with a lot of support and encouragement from you, I know you and your son will pull through.

I wish you both the best!

I am so sorry that you and your family are going through this. I am sorry to say that you can’t convince him to go if he doesn’t want to go. You can try some things that may or may not have an effect on him, but ultimately, it’s going to be when he wants it, when he’s ready.

Even if you could force him, it wouldn’t work because he wouldn’t be open to what rehab has to offer. But, it’s wonderful that you are trying so hard so maybe some things you could say might include:
    1. how his life has changed for the worse since he became addicted
    2. how it affects your family
    3. long term affects on the body
    4. that you won’t have contact with him (tough love that may not work)
    5. that after 1 year sober you’ll help him (down payment on house or something that he wants)

Without knowing more it’s hard to say. I wish you all the best. Please don’t give up.
