Food Addiction?

Question by Michaela Lawson: Food Addiction?
Okay, okay, go ahead and laugh. Say it’s stupid. Yell at me for “trying to be funny” or thinking that I have “real problems.” But I think I’m addicted to food. It’s kind of been scientifically proven that food can be just as addicting as drugs. Or alcohol. Or cigarettes. And I, for one, believe that.

Is there any way to stop the need for food? I mean, during school hours I’m pretty much able to control my eating–just don’t think about it, don’t look at food, don’t bring any food or money to school, don’t hang out with people who have food–but at home, it’s useless. My parents are no help. They tell me to “exercise control,” and yet they buy tons and tons of sweet cereals, junk food, and stuff I can’t stay away from but feel horrible about eating. I need to get away from my environment, but I can’t.

SOMEONE HELP ME PLEASE. It’s not funny. I feel awful.

Do you think you might meet criteria for binge eating disorder? When you are eating, do you eat very large amounts of food and sometimes feel like it’s completely uncontrollable?

If you’re genuinely experiencing what seems to be a binge eating disorder, your best bet would be to see a therapist along with a dietician to address both the psychological aspects of the disorder as well as the nutritional aspects.

  • Head Like A Hole says:

Everyones addicted to food, it just depends to what extent. If you can’t stop eating then you need to find more activities or sports or anything to keep you occupied. It should be a lot easier to kick this habit when it starts getting nicer outside.

VISIT A MORGUE THAT ALLOWS YOU TO WITNESS HUMAN ORGANS THAT HAVE BEEN DAMAGED BY SEVERAL MEDICAL CONDITIONS CAUSED BE OBESITY. I GUARANTEE YOU YOU WILL NOT HAVE A FOOD OBSESSION ONCE YOU SEE THE DAMAGE DONE TO YOUR HEART, LIVER, AND STOMACH. BELIEVE ME I HAVE SEEN IT.

  • krbisghey says:

You obviously need more activities, sounds like you’re eating because of boredom maybe? If you don’t think about food when you’re at school, it’s because you’re always busy, right? Keeping yourself busy will help you to not eat so much. I’m shocked that you told your parents you might be addicted to food, and they still buy junk food. Obesity and food addiction are a result of bad parenting, IMO.

I completely understand, I have gone through the same thing because I have been going through depression for 3 years and I became very much addicted to food in order to comfort myself and I have self esteem issues so usually when I would feel really bad about myself I would just eat to try and feel better but I never would. I literally would eat and be crying at the same time, I would eat even when I wasn’t hungry. I would eat until I felt like I was going to get naseous. But, in November of last year I became a vegetarian for my love of animals and I haven’t had a binge yet. (A binge is when you eat and eat and eat) And in January of this year I became a vegan. I don’t know why but becoming a vegetarian has helped me soooooooo much, I’ll see a bunch of cookies and I’ll want to eat them but then I’ll think of whats in them (eggs, milk, and all the animals that were hurt for them so it becomes unappealing and gross to me).

Bottom line people who are over-eaters and bingers have other things going on in which they comfort themselves with food. Do you eat when you are sad, happy, bored, depressed, stressed out, insecure? When you are sad, write about your feelings in a journal, when you are bored listen to music, go somewhere, when you are stressed out do something else that relaxes you like a bubble bath or a favorite movie, and so on. Portion control, eating healthier, and being a vegetarian and now a vegan has helped me. If your parents buy nothing but junk food, do what I do and go to the store with them and pick out some healthier foods that you like. Also try and be a bit more active and drink water. Just take baby steps if you need to. Also there are therapists and pychiatrists that can be very helpful with helping people who are addicted to food.

If you need anything, feel free to email me.

hey we have the same picture, you should go for walk when your hungry but you just eat 2-4 ago. or make smoothie’s crushed ice and fruit and yogurts.

  • catherine B says:

Why don’t you go shopping with your parents and help pick out healthier snacks. Clear out a section of the pantry just for you where you can have your own food. It doesn’t sound like you are compulsively over-eating it sounds like it’s around you.
Start exercising and getting more sleep will help cravings, drinking water helps and eating fruit.
Don’t listen to your parents “exercising control” is an ignorant way of thinking. Parents need to be taught how to parent.

Food addiction is real. I didn’t watch your entire video, but wanted to add that I’m recovering too, and don’t even keep bad food in my house. If I want? a cookie, I go out and eat one and then move on. Also, if I crave bad food, I drinks lots of water and go for a walk around the block. As far as I can see you’re still giggling about it, which has a little to do with guilt. You need to get a grip of yourself and see that cookies in excess will give you diabetes, and make you sick.

  • Crystalmuhammad says:

She is going to eat and loose weight the way that she chooses, the way that is right for her. She is? being completely honest with us. She dosent have to show us everything she buys you know, she could hide all the bad foods. So, think you guys should back off and enjoy her honesty and HER journey!

  • Melanie62389 says:

I think she is trying to incorporate the things she enjoys in her diet in moderation so she doesn’t binge.
I’m trying to do the same thing. I lost 25 pounds over the summer…binge free for like 4 months. Then school started…and I binged like crazy because I had restricted myself so much over the summer. Now I’m in counseling and I’m trying to learn? how to trust myself to buy things like chocolate and cookies so I don’t go months without eating them and binge every time I just have a taste.

  • okgirlygirl says:

Sharon – I see a lot of things that you buy that you shouldn’t when you are trying to lose the weight. We crave different types of food at different times of the month. That’s why it? can get so out of control. It’s your body’s chemical imbalance that could trigger your binges.
Keep up the good work and I’m glad you are learning from your mistakes. Next time, try no chocolate or cookies in your food haul. lol

  • aprylljay says:

I believe it. I am losing weight now, (50 lbs down, 40 to go) and I am always worrying? about whether I can ever overcome my addiction. You describe it so well. Uncontrollable.

  • AllenKll says:

It’s so true. I deal with that a lot… I didn’t used to have? that until I started to lose weight… It is insane. If you can figure a way to stop that… please share… it’s horrible.

  • macomarell says:

This is why I don’t buy cookies, if I want ONE we go to the book store and share a huge cookie.
I prefer binging on healthy foods, which I often do, and don’t have the health problems or weight gain from gak foods. Love it.
Yep, food? addiction does not go away.

  • vanezzy81 says:

I stay away from buying chocolate because I? cant eat it with moderation.

  • ProfessionalNag says:

We’re programmed to finish what we start. It’s powerful. The flavor of the cookie didn’t help, but the lack of limit didn’t provide a firm boundary for you. I find that having pre-measured portions helps me immensely. Having an entire container of cookies is way too much to manage.? You did great with buying 1 cookie, right? Food manufacturers developed 100 snack pouches to helps those with food issues set firm boundaries with food.
“All you can eat” get addicts and non-addicts in trouble.

This journey i am sure is not all about POSITIVITY..she is documenting her journey and that is REAL one must take their own initiative and conquer their? own destiny. i have been following her as well and i love the fact that she is REAL and not making up things for one to believe. i am not going to let her slip ups deter my weightloss. i am using this as knowledge NOT to let it happen to me… i was 195 JUNE 1st i am now 155 and this is ALL because I TOOK THE INITIATIVE to create my own DESTINY

  • Chris Fick says:

If you don’t have cookies in the house? you cannot eat them. Keep those things you know you should avoid away from you and keeps lots of heathly foods close at hand.

  • Chris Fick says:

Sounds like obsessive compulsive disorder. Addictions can be? overcome but OCD cannot usually be cured without meds.

  • Amanda Beran says:

I’ve? been following your videos for quite some time, and when it’s been going good for you, it’s been going great for me aswell. But now, when you have been talking about binging and why you do it, and the deadly sins and all that, it has effected me too the degree that I’ve gained like 5 lbs. Where is all the positivity and the inspiration? I want the old Sushi Cat back! <3

  • shesakura says:

Been there and done that. More cookies than that though. However, I have been doing much better. I am married so I just say those are my husbands. That is all I need and I feel like? that is enough. However, I know addiction is waiting around the corner, but if I can avoid it more than I run into it, than I can do this! I agree it is always there waiting. I think with me it is all sugar. I don’t overload on cabage. Only sugary things. I have gotten to where I can buy things but not touch.

  • nirvanachick84 says:

God!!? I know!!! I guess you wont get those cookies again!
