Better Off Dead?
Question by Better_off_Dead: Better off Dead?
Hello my name is Kevin.
I’m 21 years old and I live in ohio.I have a 4 year old son that I love with all of my life,I”m also a musician a struggling one at that.I will just start from the beginning .
My dream as even a little kid was to be a famous musician oneday. My teacher and my mother encouraged me alot saying how talented I was,How I had an artist’s mind,I was very *creative* they would say..Long story short since I don’t have much room on here,I was kicked out at the age of 17 ,sleeping in cars, woods, abandonned houses.etc.I would steal canned food and make fires in the snow to keep warm and to survive.I’m 21 years old and still homeless,I’m about to lose all rights over my son and he is going to be living with his mother who is a recovering crack addict.I have no place to go and no money and I refuse to be taken to jail because I can’t pay the HEFTY child suuport bill.I don’t want to end up on the streets again so I’m forced to commit myself to a psychward. What can I do?

Kevin,
First, and most importantly, PLEASE do not do anything to hurt yourself. While you may not be able to be a part of your son’s life at the time being, killing yourself would mean that he would NEVER have the chance to get to know his father. I don’t think that you want that, and I can assure you that when he’s old enough to make these decisions on his own, he won’t want that either.
It seems like you might be emotionally unsteady right now, and if addiction plays any role in how your life wound up where it is, seeking treatment might be the best idea for you right now. If you commit YOURSELF, like you said you were planning to, then you will be free to check yourself out again after you get the treatment that you need.
I’m not sure where you are in Ohio, but if you can make it to an urban center you’ll find that there are a lot of resources to help people like yourself get back on their feet (and to help you find psychiatric help and drug rehabilitation programs, if that’s what you decide to do). You seem to have access to a computer. If you do a search for homeless service providers in your area, I think you’ll find that they can offer a lot more help than any of us can.
You’re only 21 years old. You have your whole life ahead of you to make better decisions and to work toward becoming the kind of father and the kind of man that you want to be.
