Johnny Cash (played by Joaquin Phoenix) was addicted to amphetamine pills. They were part of what ruined his first marriage. He was forced to detox by June Carter and her family; they helped him get over the addiction.
Ray (Jamie Foxx’s character in “Ray”) was a heroin addict. The heroin almost tore apart his marriage and landed him in rehab, where he quit “cold turkey”.

Walk the Line is the story of Johnny Cash and how he came to fame. Along the way he met June Carter who he fell in love with and and wanted to leave his wife for. Supposedly Jerry Lee lewis and the othe guys on tour got Cash hooked on black betties, speed, etc, and he became an addict. Eventually he is arrested for transporting drugs in one of his guitars. He gets away on the charges but his life is falling apart. His marriage ends. Carter eventually take Cash in and helps him kick the drugs without rehab and when he comes back he make a point of getting her to marry him.
As for Ray, Ray is a young poor boy who goes blind as a child and his mother neglects him to toughen him up and teach him to be self sufficient before she moves on with her life. He becomes a pianist out of need to communicate and in the process find that he can mimmick anyone. He gets turned on to sex and heroine early on in his career by the guys he hangs out with who look after him a bit as he has to be careful of his money, chosing to be paid in ones because he can’t see but he can count. As he gets more popular he finds less and less people he can trust. His first manager uses him for sex and money, she is replaced by a friend who skims off the top, and is eventually replaced by a real manager many years later. He hangs around with show girls on the road and his wife at home. He continues with the heroine even to the point that he gets arrested for possession in Georgia where he is actually banned for years from performing. One of the showgirls has one of his children and he has to tell his wife this. They pay for the child’s support, but in time Ray never fully overcomes the self centered behavior that fueled his drug use. That is what destroys his marriage not necessarily the drugs.
That is about all of it.
