How Can I Help My Big Brother Overcome His Drug Addiction?

Question by cal: How can I help my big brother overcome his drug addiction?
My big brother is having a relationship with Mary Jane (marijuana). He knows that it’s not good for him but he says he likes what it does to him so he continues to use it. The thing is, Mary Jane’s really affecting his life. He’s getting failing grades in school (he’s really smart so I don’t know how that happened) and he’s getting worse at baseball. He even spends more time locked up in his room with Mary Jane than hanging out with anyone else. I think he really needs help. He’s such a gifted person and I don’t want his talents to go into waste. We’re from Eastport, Maine.

Do your parents KNOW??? I’d start by telling my parents. After that there isn’t much you can do except for praying.

What do you think? Answer below!

Try talking to him and letting him know what others are seeing happening to his life but without him wanting to quit, you will be wasting your breath. If he is still a minor, try talking to an adult (parent, teacher, counselor, or a preacher possibly) that can help with legal routes if neccessary. But from my experience with my own son on drugs, I do know nobody can help if they don’t want help.

Feel for you. I can relate. This is a common problem and one very hard to resolve. The pot head doesn’t feel that any damage is being done because of the so called innocuousness of the drug. Society has sent this false message about pot. If one uses a mind altering (psychotropic) drug DAILY, one will be affected. Period.

You mustn’t feel that you are instrumental to the outcome. Love him and trust that he will see the light. I would suggest you check out the people at ma-online.org and pose the question to the good folks there. If you could get him to check out this ‘chat room’ for himself, he might just dig the ex pot heads that frequent there and learn a lot from them.

First off, confront him, and don’t go to the parents first. Figure out the situation, get an understanding of what his situation now is. If it really is that severe (you can tell when it’s a problem if they smoke all the time; morning, during school, after school, night) you will have to get the parents involved (YES THIS IS THE BEST SOLUTION) and being a former pothead myself, I would advise the parents get involved after evaluating it yourself and realizing that there is a chance of completely wrecking his future.

Trust me I understand that it can be frustrating, but there is not much you can do. Sometimes there is a chance to bring somebody to their senses, but only at the early stages of addiction. From what you wrote, he seams to be past that, only he can help himself now. You might want somebody to intervene, and try to jolt him to his senses, and try to show him that he hi slipping. Maybe a school guidance counselor (if it is safe) or your parents, if you think it may help. At this point you have to make sure he doesn’t feel people are ganging up on him, yet are seriously concerned about him.
Don’t try to tell him to stop, it will be counterproductive.Try to raise his self confidence, and make him believe in himself. Only then can he truly want to stop. Although, even if he wants to, he may be too far along to help himself and may need professional help.
Addictions, are a tough thing to break and may need more than jest will power to stop. If he gets mad at you if you ask him to stop, or goes crazy if someone tries to talk to him about it, understand that it is not his fault, and it due to a nervous impulse. You might want to confront him, tell him that you are not interested, but if it makes you happy… Then slowly ease in some stuff to boost his self-confidence, and show him what he is throwing away.
Be sure that it really is Mary Jane and not a phase or depression he is going through. Good luck.
