This is referred to as enabling. I think people who use drugs over time develop a chemical imbalance that is fair to call a sickness. Using any dangerous addictive drug even once is stupidity given form.
A little of both. Stupid for getting hooked on it and so on. Yes it is a sickness, because of the addiction, body wants more, etc.
Its really no different then smoking addictions, accept more destroying of your body.
Person needs outside intervention, but also needs to WANT to be cured, etc.
Its also like an Alcoholic, he can’t just try it once in awhile and thinks he safe. People whom are chronic to addition, can’t stop without help and 100% quiting.
No you wouldn’t be stupid for trying to help them but if they keep on doping it up and saying they are going to quit then i wouldn’t hang around.
It is both sickness and being so stupid.
most drugs are stupid to do in the first place but if they are addicted and need help getting off of them it is a sickness cuz their body and brain is physicly deependent on them and they are also mentally dependent on them. you should do your best to help anyone that really wants to get off drugs though. it would be inhumane not to.
When you are addicted your brain’s receptors need whatever chemical you are addicted to. It may have been stupid to start in the first place, but the cravings are not their fault, as the physical withdrawal for most drugs is intense…people sometimes get hospitalized for weeks for alcohol withdrawal because if it gets bad enough you CAN die from it. So in a sense, some of these people set themselves up to where they NEED these drugs to survive.
Our understanding of rehabilitation is VERY new, and we still don’t know how to deal with addiction in a scientifically repeatable way. The most obvious example is we don’t cure heroin addicts, we just get them hooked on methadone instead. A lot of rehab programs just train people to transfer their addictions. Go to an AA meeting or rehab center one day and count the number of smokers…then ask how many smoked while they were addicts.
Staying with someone who is addicted prevents them from reaching the realization that they can’t sustain healthy relationships while on drugs. They NEED to lose friends and family as part of the awakening process. You don’t have to stop checking up on them, just refuse to connect on any kind of physical/emotional/financial level until they can prove they really want to get clean.
So yes…it is a sickness but not in the same way as others, and since it hasn’t been studied or thought of as a medical issue for very long, there is no one method of treatment, making it much harder to deal with rehabilitation.
And no willpower isn’t enough to stop…if you believe that you are pretty ignorant since people have been trying willpower since man started experimenting with drugs and it rarely works alone…there needs to be a system in place for recovery to happen.
yes drug is a sickness,a psychological sickness, they need help & support, not the ignorance of society who turns thier backs on them or runs them down, the sickness comes really after the hanging out period(depending on the drug being used):i think you are right in being there for this person regardless, that’s what one needs, support & help,if they want to help themselves then support them & help them achive this,it will be a long road ahead for them, but with the right care, they’ll get there, good luck
no. you should be there for them , drug addiction is an illness, not stupidity To be successful it will require medical intervention
